U.S. Imports Remain Strong Amid Global Trade Uncertainty

U.S. import activity continues to show resilience in 2026 despite ongoing tariff uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and changing global shipping conditions. Businesses are continuing to move goods through major U.S. ports as retailers, manufacturers, and other importers work to maintain inventory and prepare for future demand.

Strong Import Volumes Continue

U.S. containerized imports reached approximately 2.51 million TEUs in July 2026, a 4.5% increase from June and the fourth-highest July volume on record. While July imports were 4.3% lower than the exceptionally strong July 2025 figure, current volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels.

The Port of Los Angeles also reported a particularly strong July, handling 960,464 TEUs, its second-highest July volume ever. Loaded imports totaled nearly 500,000 TEUs. The Port of Long Beach similarly recorded its second-busiest July.

Businesses Continue to Plan Ahead

One major factor behind strong import activity is the changing trade environment. Many businesses have accelerated shipments to get products into the country before potential tariff changes and increases in transportation costs.

This has contributed to an earlier-than-normal peak shipping season. Industry analysts expect import volumes to remain relatively strong in August before gradually declining later in 2026 as businesses adjust inventory levels.

China Remains a Major Source of U.S. Imports

China continues to play a major role in U.S. containerized imports. In July, imports from China increased 7.2% from June, reaching their highest monthly level since July 2025. Other major sourcing countries, including Japan, South Korea, Germany, India, and Hong Kong, also recorded increases.

At the same time, companies are increasingly evaluating alternative sourcing locations and transportation strategies as tariffs, geopolitical risks, and shipping disruptions reshape international trade.

What Strong Imports Mean for Logistics

Strong import volumes create opportunities as well as challenges for the logistics industry. Higher cargo volumes can increase demand for:

  • Transportation and delivery services

  • Warehousing and distribution

  • Freight coordination

  • Customs and supply-chain support

  • Last-mile delivery

  • Reliable domestic transportation capacity

For businesses importing products into the United States, having an experienced logistics partner can help simplify transportation planning and reduce the impact of unexpected delays.

Looking Ahead

The U.S. import market is likely to remain dynamic throughout the remainder of 2026. Although the early peak in shipping activity may moderate, continued consumer demand, infrastructure investment, and evolving trade policies will keep logistics companies and importers focused on flexibility and careful planning.

For CRS Logistic Solutions, the current market reinforces the importance of providing dependable transportation, responsive communication, and customized logistics solutions.
